Tanzid and Shoriful Islam Shine As BAN Defeated ZIM In 3rd ODI
HARARE: Bangladesh produced a strong all-round performance to defeat Zimbabwe by seven wickets in the third and final One-Day International at the Harare Sports Club.
Chasing a target of 200, the visitors safely avoided a series whitewash by sprinting to 200 for 3 in just 36 overs. Despite Bangladesh securing this emphatic consolation victory, Zimbabweans ultimately claimed the three-match ODI series 2-1 following their triumphs in the opening two fixtures.
Opting to field first, the Bangladesh bowlers vindicated their captain's call by exploiting the early morning moisture. Left-arm speedster Shoriful Islam spearheaded the attack with a relentless exhibition of fast bowling, picking up an exceptional 4 for 44. Taskin Ahmed provided lethal support from the other end with figures of 2 for 32, dismantling Zimbabwe's top order early on.
The home side found themselves in severe distress at 108 for 6 by the 34th over as Ben Curran, Brian Bennett, and skipper Sikandar Raza departed cheaply. Faced with a complete batting collapse, Zimbabwe's lower-middle order staged a spirited recovery. Wessly Madhevere fought valiantly to compile a gritty top score of 75 off 74 deliveries, anchoring the innings amidst the regular fall of wickets. He found a reliable partner in lower-order batsman Brad Evans, who smashed a rapid, counter-attacking 50 off 43 balls to inject urgent momentum into the back end of the innings.
Their late-innings exploits pushed Zimbabwe to 199 all out in 48.1 overs, at least handing their bowlers a respectable score to defend.
The second half of the match, however, belonged entirely to the Bangladeshi opening batsmen. Tanzid and Soumya Sarkar completely shattered any hopes of a Zimbabwean fightback with a flawless, explosive 147-run opening partnership.
Tanzid took charge of the pursuit by brutalizing the bowling attack, falling agonizingly short of a century when he was dismissed for 94. Soumya played an equally vital anchoring role, striking a well-composed 69. Though a couple of quick wickets fell late in the chase, Najmul Hossain Shanto and the middle order comfortably guided the team across the line to wrap up an easy victory.
Both teams will now shift their focus to three-match T20I series scheduled to commence on July 15.
