Babar Azam Sends Emotional Message After Sarfaraz Retirement

Pakistan’s dressing room has witnessed many captains. Few left a mark quite like Sarfaraz Ahmed.

As news of the Sarfaraz Ahmed retirement spread on Sunday, tributes quickly followed from players who shared that journey. Among them was Babar Azam, now one of the pillars of Pakistan’s batting order. His message carried warmth, respect and a touch of nostalgia.

Posting on X, Babar thanked his former captain for trust and leadership during crucial years of his career.

“Saifi Bhai, playing under your leadership was a privilege,” Babar wrote. “Thank you for your guidance, belief and the memories you gave Pakistan cricket. Wishing you success and peace in this new chapter of life.”

The Babar Azam tribute to Sarfaraz quickly resonated with fans. Many still remember how Sarfaraz backed young players when Pakistan cricket was entering a new phase.

A captain who reshaped Pakistan’s dressing room

Sarfaraz Ahmed’s journey stretched nearly two decades in international cricket. The wicketkeeper batter debuted in ODIs in 2007 before stepping into Test and T20 formats three years later.

Numbers tell only part of the story.

Across formats, Sarfaraz played 54 Tests, 117 ODIs and 61 T20Is. He collected 6,164 international runs with six centuries and 35 half-centuries. Behind the stumps he remained sharp, completing 315 catches and 56 stumpings.

Yet his captaincy defined the era.

Under Sarfaraz, Pakistan climbed to the No.1 ranking in T20 internationals. The side also produced a remarkable run of 11 straight T20I series victories. Clean sweeps followed against teams such as West Indies, Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand and Scotland.

Perhaps more importantly, Sarfaraz helped shape the next generation. Players like Shaheen Shah Afridi, Hasan Ali, Imam ul Haq, Fakhar Zaman and Shadab Khan entered international cricket during his leadership years.

The biggest moment arrived in 2017.

Pakistan stunned India in the ICC Champions Trophy final at The Oval, winning by 180 runs in a performance that electrified supporters worldwide. The triumph placed Sarfaraz among the rare captains to lift ICC trophies for Pakistan.

The Babar Azam tribute to Sarfaraz reflects how deeply that leadership influenced teammates.

Sarfaraz’s last international appearance came in Perth during Pakistan’s Test series against Australia in 2023. Now, with the gloves finally set aside, one chapter of Pakistan cricket quietly closes. Another begins beyond the boundary.
