Babar Azam Joins Imran Khan in Pakistan Captaincy Milestone

Babar Azam Joins Imran Khan in Pakistan Captaincy Milestone

The Babar Azam captaincy record added another remarkable chapter on Monday as the Pakistan skipper became only the third captain in the country's history to lead the national side in 150 international matches across all three formats.

The milestone came during the series-deciding Test against the West Indies after the hosts won the toss and chose to bat. It also marked another significant moment in Pakistan Test captain history following Babar's recent return as the red-ball leader.

Only Imran Khan, with 187 matches, and Misbah-ul-Haq, with 151, have captained Pakistan more often. Babar now sits alongside those legendary names, strengthening his place among the country's most successful leaders.

Babar's Numbers Put Him Among Pakistan's Finest Leaders

His numbers back up the achievement. Across 150 internationals, Babar has guided Pakistan to 84 victories while suffering 51 defeats. His record also includes two ties, four draws and eight no-results, giving him an overall win percentage of 56.

That success places him second on Pakistan's all-format captaincy wins list, behind only Imran Khan's 89 victories and ahead of Misbah's 77.

The Pakistan Test captain also returns to the longest format with encouraging experience. During his first spell between 2020 and 2023, he led Pakistan in 22 Tests, collecting 10 wins, seven defeats and four draws before stepping away from the role.

The Pakistan Cricket Board later appointed Shan Masood, whose tenure produced four victories from 16 Tests. Ahead of the tours of the West Indies and England, the board handed the Test captaincy back to Babar, signalling renewed confidence in his leadership.

Babar's captaincy journey started in October 2019 when he was appointed Pakistan's T20I skipper. He added the ODI captaincy in 2020 before taking charge of the Test side later that year.

He stepped down after the 2023 World Cup before returning as white-ball captain in 2024. Months later, he resigned again to focus on his batting and workload management.

Now, with another landmark secured, the Babar Azam captaincy record continues to grow. The latest achievement also strengthens the standing of the Pakistan Test captain ahead of another demanding overseas season.
