Babar Azam reached a defining milestone in his career by lifting his first Pakistan Super League title as captain. Leading Peshawar Zalmi to victory, Babar not only secured the franchise’s second trophy but also ended a nine-year gap since their last triumph in 2017 under Darren Sammy. This achievement firmly places him among the most impactful leaders in the league, strengthening his legacy around the Babar Azam PSL title moment.
Having started his PSL captaincy journey in 2022 with Karachi Kings, Babar’s persistence finally paid off in 2026. His leadership throughout the campaign reflected calm decision-making and consistency, which ultimately guided Zalmi to the title.
With this win, Babar became only the second Zalmi skipper to claim a PSL trophy and the ninth captain overall to achieve the feat. He now stands alongside notable names such as Sarfaraz Ahmed and Misbah-ul-Haq, further strengthening his position in the PSL captains list.
The list of PSL-winning captains continues to be led by Shaheen Shah Afridi, who tops the chart with three titles. Other captains to have lifted the trophy include JP Duminy, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shadab Khan, each with one title to their name.
The title-clinching performance came at Gaddafi Stadium, where Zalmi outplayed Hyderabad Kingsmen in a thrilling contest. Opting to bowl first, Babar’s decision proved effective as the opposition was restricted to 129 in 18 overs.
Saim Ayub showed resilience with a fighting 54 off 50 balls, including five fours and two sixes, but lacked support from the rest of the lineup.
Chasing 130, Zalmi faced early setbacks and slipped to 40-4, putting pressure on the middle order. However, Aaron Hardie and Abdul Samad steadied the innings with an impressive 85-run stand for the fifth wicket.
Samad contributed 48 off 34 deliveries before his dismissal, while Hardie remained composed till the end. His unbeaten 56 off 39 balls, decorated with nine boundaries, ensured Zalmi crossed the line comfortably with five wickets in hand and 28 balls remaining.
