Australia posted a strong total in Adelaide at the end of the first day of the third Ashes test. They scored 326 runs for 8 wickets, as Alex Carey led the Aussie fight with a brilliant century. Alongside Carey, Usman Khawaja was the other notable performer who scored 82 runs off just 126 balls. He came into the match at the last minute after Steve Smith was ruled out of the Adelaide test due to sudden illness.
England got a strong start on the first day of the Adelaide test, as they picked wickets upfront to disrupt the Australian batting plans. It was Usman Khawaja who steadied the innings for Australia by holding one end strongly. He came into the match with a lot of pressure, as selectors picked him for the Adelaide test only after Steve Smith was ruled out of the game.
Usman Khawaja made the most of his opportunity by delivering a strong performance that helped Australia recover from a difficult position on day one. He built a solid partnership with Alex Carey to lead the Australian charge, giving England bowlers harsh treatment on the field.
Due to the batting masterclass of Usman Khawaja and Alex Carey, Australia got a solid base that allowed the lower order to chip in with valuable runs in the end. Alex Carey was looking well settled to end the day with an unbeaten century; however, a late strike from Will Jacks removed him from the batting. He got out after scoring 106 runs, giving Australia a commanding score in the first innings of the Adelaide test.
Talking about England’s bowling performance, they once again looked shaky throughout the whole day. The bowlers managed to create pressure on Australia at times, but couldn’t maintain that advantage for long. Jofra Archer was the standout performer for England, as he performed superbly to take three wickets on the first day of the third test.
Besides Archer, no other England bowler managed to make an impact on the first day. Will Jacks proved to be the most expensive, as he gave 105 runs in just 20 overs while taking two wickets.
Australia will now resume the innings on day two with Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon batting on the crease. Starc has played a good hand by scoring 33 runs so far in the first innings. The home side would want to see Starc scoring more on day two, as there are not many wickets left. Meanwhile, England will aim to wrap up the innings quickly to keep Australia under 350 in the first innings.
