Alex Carey, Mitchell Marsh Fifty Push Target as Australia Scored 322 in SA vs AUS 3rd ODI

Alex Carey, Mitchell Marsh Fifty Push Target as Australia Scored 322 in SA vs AUS 3rd ODI

POTCHEFSTROOM: A resilient batting performance from the visitors ensured a competitive finale to the dead-rubber encounter as Australia scored 322 for nine in their allotted 50 overs against South Africa in the SA vs AUS 3rd ODI at Senwes Park.

Having already conceded an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, the Australian outfit walked out with intent, fighting to salvage pride and avoid a complete series whitewash. Intermittent weather and a damp outfield delayed proceedings by thirty minutes, prompting South African stand-in captain Aiden Markram to bowl first under heavily overcast conditions.

Seeking to test their bench depth ahead of upcoming red-ball commitments, the Proteas made five wholesale changes, resting regular skipper Temba Bavuma.

Australia’s revised opening pair faced a testing initial burst, but it was the introduction of the middle-order engine room that truly shifted the momentum. Mitchell Marsh counter-attacked aggressively, striking a ferocious 56 off just 42 deliveries, studded with eight boundaries and two sixes. His explosive knock laid a solid platform, forcing the Proteas bowlers onto the defensive early in the afternoon.

When South Africa threatened to claw back into the game via timely breakthroughs from their spin contingent, wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey anchored the innings with a mature 74 off 88 balls. Carey's measured approach and calculated risk-taking stabilized the innings through the middle overs.

Crucial lower-order cameos, including a composed 48 from Oliver Peake and a breezy 30 from Matt Renshaw, efficiently propelled the scoring rate past the 300-run milestone.

South Africa’s bowling response was spearheaded by local seam prospect Corbin Bosch, who mixed his lengths brilliantly on a slow surface to return figures of 4 for 60. Bosch broke crucial partnerships just as Australia threatened to cross the 350-mark.

He received adequate support from express paceman Gerald Coetzee, who picked up 2 for 61, though the home side's fielding unit looked uncharacteristically sloppy under the lights.

With the pitch projected to offer substantial assistance to the spinners as the night progresses, a formidable target of 323 sets up an intriguing second-half chase.

While South Africa boasts a heavily in-form batting lineup, the scoreboard pressure in this final SA vs AUS 3rd ODI could pave the way for a consolation victory for Pat Cummins' men if their frontline bowlers hit their straps early.
