Augsburg beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 at the BayArena to complete a rare double, with Fabian Rieder scoring a penalty in the 97th minute. Finn Dahmen also played a key role in the victory, as he pulled off important saves to keep the home side at bay.
Leverkusen came into the game on the back of two straight Bundesliga wins, something they hadn’t managed since January. Kasper Hjulmand’s team were still chasing a Champions League spot, sitting four points behind fourth place with big matches against RB Leipzig and VfB Stuttgart coming up.
The home side started well, controlling the ball and creating chances early on. They took the lead when Patrik Schick met a pinpoint cross from Edmond Tapsoba and headed it past Dahmen. But the lead didn’t last long, as Augsburg hit back straight away. Fabian Rieder equalised with a strong shot from outside the box, which took a slight touch off Quansah before beating Mark Flekken.
Leverkusen stayed on top, having 13 shots in the first half and nearly 70 percent possession, but couldn’t go ahead again. Dahmen made some important saves, including stops against Nathan Tella and Schick just before the break.
The second half looked much the same, with Leverkusen pushing forward again and again but failing to score. Tella missed a big chance when he was through on goal, while Alejandro Grimaldo and Ibrahim Maza both went close. Substitute Christian Kofane also made an impact and had a few efforts as Leverkusen searched for a winner.
Even after 23 shots in the second half, Leverkusen still couldn’t find the net. Then, right at the end, Augsburg got their chance and stunned the hosts in a dramatic fashion. Substitute Uchenna Ogundu was brought down in the box by Montrell Culbreath in the 97th minute, and Rieder calmly scored the penalty to give Augsburg a dramatic win.
