Atletico Madrid Hold Off Barcelona Fightback to Reach Champions League Semifinals

Atletico Madrid held on to reach the UEFA Champions League semifinals 3-2 on aggregate, even though they lost a thrilling second leg against Barcelona 2-1 in Madrid. It was a thrilling game in which the visitors looked dominant, however, Atletico held their nerves to secure victory on aggregate.

Barcelona came into the game 2-0 down from the first leg, but Lamine Yamal pulled one back in the overall score just five minutes in when he finished past Atletico keeper Juan Musso after a mistake from former Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet. Nineteen minutes later, Barcelona were level on aggregate, as Ferran Torres met a pass from Dani Olmo and fired a strong left-footed shot into the top corner.

The loud home crowd went quiet for seven minutes, until Marcos Llorente ran down the right side and picked out Ademola Lookman in the box, putting Atletico back ahead on aggregate. Barcelona could have made it 3-0 on the night just five minutes earlier, but Musso made a strong save, spreading himself to stop a diving header from an unmarked Fermin Lopez.

Ferran Torres thought he had scored Barcelona’s third goal when he met a deflected ball and guided it into the top corner, but VAR ruled it out for offside. Meanwhile, Barcelona kept attacking, but just like in the first leg last week, they were reduced to 10 men when Eric Garcia brought down Atletico striker Alexander Sorloth as he ran onto a through ball.

Even after that, Barcelona pushed everyone forward and came close with headers from Robert Lewandowski and Ronald Araujo, but they couldn’t complete what would have been one of the biggest comebacks in Champions League history.

Credit to Atletico Madrid, as they held their nerve to keep the lead, even though it wasn’t one of their best nights at home. They will now face either Arsenal or Sporting CP in the semi-finals, which is also expected to be a thrilling clash.

Meanwhile, Atletico boss Diego Simeone was jubilant after the match, saying he feels proud to see the team performing well even though the squad has changed several times.

"It's been 14 years now. Seeing the team still competing excites me. The players have changed, we've started over countless times, and we're back among the top four in Europe.” said Diego Simeone.

"Playing in a Champions League semi-final, how wonderful. We'll go there with all our enthusiasm and faith. We know our strengths and weaknesses. We're ready. We'll go there to find what we've been searching for for so many years." added Diego Simeone.
