World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka arrived at the Indian Wells Open with the spotlight already firmly on her tennis. By the end of her second-round outing, however, conversation around the courts had shifted as much to her personal milestone as to her performance.
Sabalenka stepped onto the court wearing a newly revealed engagement ring, a detail that quickly caught the attention of fans and cameras alike. The Belarusian star had only recently announced her engagement to Brazilian entrepreneur Georgios Franguli, and she admitted after the match that she felt completely comfortable competing with the diamond ring on her finger.
“I was pretty confident wearing this ring,” Sabalenka said with a smile. “It feels super comfortable and shiny.”
The world No.1 explained that her team had taken the practical step of checking the ring beforehand to ensure it would not loosen during play, a small but necessary precaution in the middle of a high-level tennis tournament.
“We double-checked if there was a possibility to lose the diamond, and there was none,” she said. “I was pretty confident wearing it, hoping it might even distract my opponent.”
Away from the court, Sabalenka also opened up about the proposal itself, describing it as an emotional surprise. While members of her team knew what was coming, she said she had no idea until the moment arrived.
“I saw Georgios, and I was crying half the time,” she recalled. “I thought I looked ugly and not prepared, and this is such a beautiful moment.”
The 27-year-old even joked about trying to control how the moment was captured on camera.
“I asked the videographer and photographer to make sure my face wasn’t in the pictures, just the ring or side views, because I didn’t want people to see how I looked,” she said. “But it was a beautiful moment.”
Sabalenka also kept the mood light when talking about their relationship.
“What have I learned about him? He likes OakBerry a lot,” she joked. “And what he has learned about me? That I’m crazy.”
