Arsenal defeated Sporting CP in the latest UEFA Champions League clash, as Kai Havertz scored a late goal to give the English football giants a stunning lead of 1-0 at Lisbon. Sporting, looking to keep their giant-killer reputation after a historic home winning run, defended strongly for 90 minutes in a tough display. However, the Gunners finally scored in the first minute of stoppage time to break the tie, finishing the first-leg with a vital victory.
Talking about the match, Arsenal felt plenty of pressure while coming into this contest. That pressure nearly grew when Sporting’s left-back Maxi Araujo hit the Arsenal crossbar early, following a perfect through ball from Ousmane Diomande.
The Gunners controlled much of the first half but struggled to create clear chances. Their closest effort came when Noni Madueke struck the crossbar directly from a corner, but failed to make a mark.
Sporting kept posing a threat with quick counter-attacks and nearly punished Arsenal again when Araujo pushed forward and set up Francisco Trincao, who missed his shot.
Martin Zubimendi appeared to give Arsenal a second-half lead with a curling effort from the edge of the box, but the goal was disallowed because former Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres was offside in the build-up.
The home team pressed hard in the final stages, and David Raya made three strong saves to keep the score level, before Havertz secured the win for Arsenal with a stunning strike.
This victory by downing Sporting 1-0 at Lisbon is Arsenal’s first in three games and gives Mikel Arteta’s team a boost as they return to Premier League action against Bournemouth this weekend.
