Argentina Defeated New Zealand 7-1 in Stunning FIH World Cup Comeback

AMSTELVEEN: Argentina put on a masterclass in clinical attacking hockey, staging a massive comeback to blow past New Zealand 7–1 in their Pool A encounter at the 2026 Men's Hockey World Cup. The Argentina vs New Zealand match delivered a spectacular shift in momentum at the Wagener Hockey Stadium as Los Leones systematically dismantled the Black Sticks' defense.

The match opened with New Zealand looking sharp and intent on dictating the tempo. Their early tactical pressure paid dividends in the 13th minute when Kane Russell successfully converted a penalty corner to put the Black Sticks ahead 1–0. New Zealand’s defensive structure held firm through the remainder of the first quarter, frustrating the Argentine attackers and restricting their circle entries.

However, the second quarter saw a complete structural breakdown for New Zealand, heavily influenced by disciplinary issues. Argentina capitalized almost immediately, with star forward Tomas Domene executing a brilliant set-piece to find the equalizer in the 22nd minute.

The halftime interval did little to slow down the South American momentum. Coming out of the break, Argentina defeated New Zealand in every individual battle across the turf. The Argentine midfield, orchestrated by veteran presence, began carving open the Black Sticks' transitional defense. Bautista Capurro gave Argentina their first lead of the day in the 39th minute with a devastating field goal.

As New Zealand pushed numbers forward to find an equalizer, their discipline deteriorated further. Domene struck again in the 3rd quarter to make it 3–1, completing a dynamic phase of play that left the Black Sticks completely winded.

The fourth quarter turned into a total goalfest for Los Leones. Tadeo Marcucci extended the lead to 4–1 in the 48th minute, effectively killing off any hopes of a New Zealand comeback. Just minutes later, Nicolas Keenan added a fifth, exploiting a fatigued Black Sticks backline.

With New Zealand down to ten men due to successive yellow cards for Joseph Morrison and Charlie Morrison in the final ten minutes, Argentina showed no mercy. Capurro bagged his second of the match in the 58th minute to make it 6–1. Tomas Domene capped off his spectacular hat-trick with a final blow in the 60th minute, sealing a historic 7–1 victory.

With this dominant performance, Argentina firmly asserts their dominance in Pool A, while New Zealand is left searching for answers before their next group match.
