Arafat Becomes 1st Pakistani Bowler to Claim Five Wickets on ODI Debut
RAWALPINDI: Emerging left-arm spinner Arafat Minhas has etched his name into the annals of national cricket history. He became the very first Pakistani bowler to claim five wickets on ODI debut.
The 21-year-old prodigy showcased remarkable maturity beyond his years, spearheading a bowling performance that restricted a formidable Australian batting lineup to 200 runs at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.Minhas, who previously represented Pakistan at the Under-19 level and turned heads in the Pakistan Super League, proved to be the ultimate trump card for his national side.
Introduced into the attack on a dry surface assisting the slow bowlers, his lethal combination of pinpoint accuracy and deceptive flight completely paralyzed the visitors' middle order. He claimed the pivotal wickets of stand-in captain Josh Inglis and the seasoned Marnus Labuschagne on consecutive deliveries. Minhas closed his masterful 10-over quota with extraordinary figures of 5 for 32, ensuring a fairytale beginning to his international career.
Shattering a 42-Year-Old National Record
Before Minhas’s historic spell, Pakistan’s rich cricket legacy had surprisingly never produced a debutant five-wicket haul in the 50-over format. The previous benchmark for the best bowling figures by a Pakistani player on an ODI debut was held by former fast bowler Zakir Khan, who took 4 for 19 against New Zealand way back in 1984. This remained untouched for 42 years.
Notable debutants who came remarkably close but stopped at four wickets include:
- Zakir Khan: 4 for 19 vs New Zealand (1984)
- Sarfraz Nawaz: 4 for 44 vs New Zealand (1973)
- Abdul Qadir: 4 for 39 vs New Zealand (1983)
- Abrar Ahmed: 4 for 40 vs Zimbabwe (2024)
Minhas now stands completely isolated at the top of the pyramid. Arafat enters an elite players' list of just 16 cricketers who have achieved a fifer in their maiden ODI appearance. His heroic debut effortlessly sets a new standard for Pakistan’s future bowling generations.
