Andrew Flintoff Leaves England Lions Head Coach Position

Andrew Flintoff has left his role as England Lions head coach after nearly two years in charge of the team. He became the Lions coach in September 2024 after returning from a serious accident while filming a British TV programme in Surrey.

The 48-year-old also took charge of BBL side Sydney Thunder as their head coach in June this year. He was initially expected to continue working with both teams at the same time, which was considered by many as a challenging job.

As part of the arrangement, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) allowed Flintoff to miss the Lions’ two four-day matches in South Africa this winter because of his BBL duties. The decision led to criticism of the former all-rounder, with many alleging that Flintoff was prioritizing the BBL over his national duties.

Last week, England Men’s managing director Rob Key defended Flintoff and backed him amid the criticism. He said the ECB was "incredibly fortunate to have him", and that his presence in the management should be supported.

Flintoff has now decided to leave the Lions head coach position completely. He called the role "one of the most important" jobs in English cricket.

He also said he is looking forward to working with Sydney Thunder later this year in the 16th season of the BBL.

"Unfortunately I've made the decision to step away from my role with the Lions. Not only have I enjoyed my time having the opportunity to work with the best young cricketers in the country, but have taken great pride in seeing them develop," said Andrew Flintoff.

"I'd like to thank the coaches and staff for all their passion, tireless work and support they give everyday. In particular, Ed Barney who I've loved working with and was so lucky to have as a performance director, and obviously Rob [Key] for trusting me with one of the most Important roles in English cricket.” added Andrew Flintoff.

Flintoff was expected to lead a Professional County Club Select XI in a four-day tour match against Pakistan next week. The game is scheduled to start on Wednesday at Beckenham, but England Under-19s coach Mike Yardy will now take charge of the side instead.
