Anderson Appointed Lancashire's Full-Time Captain for 2026 Championship

Anderson had been an interim captain twice in 2025 and now assumed the full-time position for the 2026 season. Despite retiring with a record 704 Test wickets in the England record, Anderson has not lost commitment to Lancashire and has served the club since his adolescence.

His performance as a leader last season was applauded for his ability to make sound decisions calmly. During the 2025 Championship, Anderson scored 17 wickets in six games, which demonstrates his worth as a player and a leader.

Anderson’s background as a bowler and as a leader will play a very important role in establishing the tone of the squad, particularly with the pressure of going back to the top.

He will be concerned with the creation of an integrated, motivated team. Anderson is well prepared to lead Lancashire into a winning team. The club will aim to be more consistent in all departments under his leadership and aim to become Division One contenders.

Lancashire also has a different coaching staff along with the new captaincy. Anderson will work closely with Steven Croft, who replaced Dale Benkenstein as the head coach. The philosophy of Croft is similar to that of Anderson, making the pair of leaders powerful. Croft has already commended the on and off-field performance of Anderson and confidence in his leadership.

“I’m grateful for the support from Crofty and from my teammates,” Anderson said. “I’m looking forward to leading the side into the new County Championship season in April.”

This new leadership structure, with Anderson as captain and Croft as head coach, will provide Lancashire with a potential base to work with.
