“He Looks Like a Slogger to Me” - Amir Questions Abhishek Sharma’s Technique

Former Pakistan quick Mohammad Amir has stirred pre-match debate with a sharp evaluation of India’s attacking opener Abhishek Sharma, just days before the high-voltage showdown between India national cricket team and Pakistan national cricket team in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Speaking on a television program, Amir questioned the left-hander’s batting structure and shot selection, describing his method as overly aggressive and result-dependent. The former pacer said Sharma’s approach revolves around constant big hitting, which increases volatility at the top of the order.

“From what I’ve seen, if I’m being completely honest, he looks like a slogger to me,” Amir said. “He tries to hit every ball. If it connects, it connects, but most of the time the chances of failure are higher.”

Amir stressed that elite-level success requires repeatability, not just impact knocks scattered between low scores. He suggested that Abhishek Sharma’s return often swings wildly from match to match, raising concerns about reliability against disciplined bowling attacks.

“You must have noticed that he might play eight innings and score in only one of them, while in the others he gets 10, 15, 0, 20,” he said.

He further pointed to technical gaps against movement and change of pace, adding that controlled variations and slower balls could expose weaknesses. Still, Amir acknowledged the opener’s match-winning ceiling when timing and momentum align.

“When it comes off, it really comes off, and he can hurt any team,” he said.

Despite the critique, Sharma’s T20 numbers remain strong, highlighted by a strike rate near 195 and multiple big scores, including centuries. His recent tournament start, however, has been quiet, adding intrigue ahead of the marquee fixture.
