England is currently taking a mid-Ashes trip to Noosa, an affluent resort town on the Queensland coast. Many fans and cricket experts have questioned the timing of this trip, as the visitors are down 2-0 in the Ashes. The England head coach has defended this outing by saying that the team needs some time away from the game to refresh their minds for the next match.
The Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey has also supported this view, saying that the trip to Noosa will help England recharge before the next match. He added that the schedule of the ongoing Ashes series is quite long, so teams can choose how they want to spend their time between games.
"I think it'd be a nice holiday. It's a pretty big series, with lots of time between games. For the Australian cricket team, we get to go home for a few days and be with families, so touring parties have got to find time to fill in those little windows.” said Alex Carey while talking to the media.
He added that teams should spend some time away from the game to recharge their batteries. Due to the high competition in the Ashes, players need to come up in the field with the right mindset. They can only do that by taking little breaks from cricket which helps to keep the mind in the right balance.
"I'm not sure you need to do it [but] it's totally up to the touring groups to find ways to take your mind off cricket for a little bit. The Ashes is very hotly contested. You don't want to be thinking of cricket every single day of the tour. If you do have a little break, it's probably not a bad time to refresh the batteries." said Australian wicketkeeper, Alex Carey.
Speaking about the media that is constantly tracking the actions of the England team, Carey said that cricketers often become the center of attention because of the popularity they enjoy among fans. Therefore, it is up to the media whether they want to follow certain teams outside the ground as well.
"Look, we're in a pretty lucky position that we're playing professional sport and people want to follow the journey. If the media likes to follow certain teams around, that's totally up to them to do. We understand that comes with the privilege of playing the game." said Alex Carey.
Australia are currently leading the Ashes with a score line of 2-0. They are avoiding to become complacent in the upcoming matches, as they know that England can still make a comeback. Alex Carey is also well aware of this fact, and he says that Australia needs to play good cricket till the end to win the series.
"We know England are a very good team. We also understand we were in a position like this a couple of years ago in England. We weren't able to win that series, but we were good enough to retain the Ashes. We're really excited for the opportunity we've got, but we understand we've got to keep playing good cricket.” said Alex Carey.
He added that Australia is not looking too far ahead, as the focus of the team is currently on winning the next match. They understand the abilities of England, so underestimating anything is not an option for them.
"We are not looking too far ahead either. I think this playing group has been able to adapt really well, stay really present and again find ways to improve. We all know the threats that England pose, but for us to focus on our best stuff is a pretty good way to go about it. We're definitely not taking the foot off the gas at all." said Alex Carey.
The Australian wicketkeeper also expects Nathan Lyon to play a big role in the upcoming matches. He said that Lyon didn’t bowl much in the first two matches, however, he still has the hunger to perform strongly for Australia in the rest of the series.
"You want guys being disappointed, not being selected. You want that hunger and we are really lucky to have a squad of 15 who are all ready to go… No doubt, Nathan probably has a big role to play in this Test match." concluded Alex Carey.
