Afghanistan and Bangladesh are currently facing each other in an ODI series. They are playing all the matches in the UAE, where the weather usually stays hot and humid. The T20I leg of the series has just finished, with Bangladesh winning all the matches comprehensively against Afghanistan. They clean-swept the Afghans with a final score line of 3-0, giving a clear statement of dominance at the end.
All three T20I matches were played at Sharjah, where the surface usually remains flat and dry due to hot weather conditions. Bangladesh took full advantage of that by playing positively with the bat on flat Sharjah wickets. They found great success in that, as their batters hammered Afghanistan in all three matches.
Talking about Afghanistan, they relied on spin bowling to make an impact. Unfortunately, this didn’t work well because the nature of the surface was flat due to hot weather conditions. Besides bowling, it also exposed the fragility of Afghanistan's batting on the slow and low Sharjah wickets. As a result, they lost to Bangladesh quite badly in Sharjah, even though they had Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi playing in the squad.
Now, the action has shifted to Abu Dhabi, where all three ODI matches will be played. It has the same conditions as Sharjah, however, some breeze in the night often assists bowlers. It will be interesting to see how Afghanistan copes with this challenge, as Sharjah proved to be a nightmare for them.
Let’s take a look at the weather conditions of each venue. This will let us understand how teams will try to formulate their plans for the ODI series at Abu Dhabi, where the weather could play a role in deciding the outcome of the match.
Sharjah usually experiences hot and dry weather throughout the day. The normal temperature in the city keeps hovering around 35°C to 40°C. This means that matches in Sharjah Cricket Stadium become extremely demanding for the players. Alongside the match pressure, they need to deal with the humid weather accordingly. It is challenging not just for the bowling side, but for the batters as well, who play in the middle wearing different types of protective gear.
Except for some cool breeze at night, the weather conditions at Abu Dhabi are no different from Sharjah. It stays hot throughout the day, with the humidity level increasing significantly. The ODI matches that are played in Abu Dhabi usually start in the evening. This allows the players to feel a bit more relaxed; however, the hot weather still affects the pitch.

The weather conditions in Sharjah and Abu Dhabi have a significant effect on the scheduled games. It is therefore important for teams to build their plans keeping the weather conditions in view. The ODI matches between Afghanistan and Bangladesh are at Abu Dhabi, so both teams will need to devise their strategies accordingly. Ideally, the team that will bat first at Abu Dhabi will have more chances of winning, because chasing at night often becomes difficult in the second innings.
