Afghanistan Name Ibrahim Zadran Captain For India T20I Series

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has named a 15-player squad for the three-match T20I series against India in New Delhi. Ibrahim Zadran has been handed the captaincy and will lead Afghanistan in the upcoming matches.

The series is set to run from September 13 to 17 in New Delhi. It will be Zadran’s first international assignment as Afghanistan captain.

The 24-year-old was appointed skipper in March after Afghanistan failed to make a strong impact at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, where Rashid Khan was in charge. Despite losing the captaincy, Rashid remains part of the squad for the India series.

Experienced fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq has also returned to the squad after missing the T20 World Cup and previous three-match home T20I series against West Indies. He was sidelined during that period because of a stress fracture in his right shoulder.

Gulbadin Naib has also made his way back into Afghanistan’s T20I squad after being out of the side. Apart from him, wicketkeeper-batter Noor Rahman has earned his first call-up after putting together strong performances in domestic cricket and the Shpageeza Cricket League.

Most of the other players from the previous squad have kept their places. They were part of the Afghanistan team that exited the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in the first round after finishing third in Group D.

The Afghanistan vs India series will begin on September 13 in New Delhi. The first match will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, which will also host the second and third T20Is on September 15 and 17.

It would be interesting to see how India will play in this series, as their last few T20I outings have produced disappointing results. The newly appointed skipper Shreyas Iyer would also be looking to stamp his authority after the BCCI sacked Suryakumar Yadav immediately after winning the T20 World Cup 2026.
