January 13, 2025
On Monday, 13th January, the Afghanistan Cricket Board announced the Afghanistan ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad.
The team’s key player and opening batsman Ibrahim Zadran will be making a comeback after being sidelined due to an injury.
Afghanistan who were once the underdogs are now on their way to becoming a competent white-ball team.
They finished at the sixth spot in the ICC ODI World Cup in 2023 and reached the semi-final in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 after defeating the mighty Australian team.
This will be Afghanistan’s first run at the eight-nation Champions Trophy which is making a comeback after 8 long years and is set to take place from February 19th to March 9th in Pakistan and the UAE.
“Zadran, who was away from action due to an ankle injury, has returned to the squad,” said a statement from the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB).
“However, Mujeeb Ur Rahman misses out on the selection, as AM Ghazanfar, a similar mystery spinner, has made the cut for the mega event.”
Afghanistan beat England and Pakistan in the ODI World Cup and Australia and New Zealand in the T20 World Cup, a true testament to this team’s skill and potential.
The 9th edition of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will kickstart on February 19th when host and defending champions Pakistan will lock horns with New Zealand in Karachi.
The ICC has created two groups of four teams with Afghanistan placed in Group B alongside South Africa, England, and Australia.
Hashmatullah Shahidi’s team will begin their CT25 campaign on February 21 against South Africa.
Hashmatullah Shahidi (c), Rahmat Shah (vc), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Ikram Alikhil (wk), Ibrahim Zadran, Sediqullah Atal, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Rashid Khan, AM Ghazanfar, Noor Ahmad, Fazal Haq Farooqi, Naveed Zadran and Farid Ahmad Malik.
