AC Milan Part Ways With Massimiliano Allegri After Champions League Exit

AC Milan have confirmed they have dismissed coach Massimiliano Allegri along with several senior officials after failing to secure a place in next season’s Champions League.

The Serie A giants finished their campaign with a 2-1 defeat at home against Cagliari on Sunday, a result that ended their hopes of reaching Europe’s top club competition.

Allegri was brought back to the club last May, more than a decade after his first spell ended, but he could not guide them back into the Champions League after another disappointing season.

"After the disappointment of last year, the mandate ownership set for the club was to return to the Champions League and to establish a foundation for winning consistently at the top of Serie A," the owner of AC Milan, RedBird Capital, said in a statement.

"It is now time for change and a comprehensive reorganisation of football operations.” added the statement.

"Effective immediately, we are parting ways with CEO Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare, head coach Massimiliano Allegri and technical director Geoffrey Moncada.” added the statement.

The statement further said that new appointments for the vacant positions will be announced shortly, as the club prepares to build a renewed setup.

"Further announcements regarding the next appointments will be made in due course, with the goal to be ready and well prepared for the next season," said the RedBird statement.

Milan ended one point behind Como, who took the last Champions League spot in fourth place, after their defeat to struggling Cagliari and Como’s win over Cremonese. They had gone into the final matchday sitting in third place.

For more than half of the season, they were in the top two, but their form dropped towards the end, as they managed just one win along with three defeats and a draw in the closing games.

"For the majority of this season, we were in the top two positions in Serie A, with a credible shot at competing for the Scudetto," said the RedBird statement.

"The final stretch was completely inconsistent with the performance up to that point, with last night's disappointing loss in the final game turning the season into an unequivocal failure," added the statement.
