Punjab have planned to go bold with Abhishek Sharma in the squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The selectors have named a 16-member squad, including Abhishek Sharma, with experienced internationals set to join once they wrap up national commitments.
Domestic performers who know conditions, understand roles, and can adjust without fuss. Punjab begin their run against Maharashtra, with all league matches scheduled in Jaipur.
Abhishek’s inclusion brings flexibility rather than flash, as he offers coverage across phases and adds another option in the middle overs. Alongside him, Prabhsimran Singh, Anmolpreet Singh, and Naman Dhir form the spine of the batting unit.
Ramandeep Singh and Sanvir Singh provide late-innings support, while Harpreet Brar strengthens the balance with both bat and ball.
Shubman Gill and Arshdeep Singh will miss a few opening matches. While India began a three-match ODI series against New Zealand on January 11, followed by five T20Is later in the month.
The pace attack will be led by Gurnoor Brar and Krish Bhagat during the league phase. Both are expected to handle the workload until Arshdeep returns. Last season, Arshdeep finished as Punjab’s top wicket-taker and his presence could reshape plans once he slots back in.
Punjab has not named a captain in the announcement, and the call appears open, possibly linked to player availability as the tournament progresses.
Quarter-final exits marked the previous season, and this time, Punjab seems focused on control rather than overhaul.
