Abhishek Sharma has been fined 25% of his match fee and handed one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. The incident happened during an Indian Premier League match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on April 2.
The sanction relates to a Level 1 offence under Article 2.3 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which deals with the use of offensive or inappropriate language that can be heard by players, officials, spectators or broadcast microphones.
The IPL confirmed the penalty in an official statement after the match. The player accepted the charge and the decision of the match referee, which is final in Level 1 offences.
“Abhishek Sharma, all-rounder, Sunrisers Hyderabad, has been fined 25 per cent of his match fees and has also accumulated one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during his team's match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on Thursday,” the statement read.
“He admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.3 and accepted the Match Referee's sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee's decision is final and binding,” it added.
The incident is believed to have taken place shortly after Sharma’s dismissal during the match. He appeared frustrated after being given out following a boundary catch taken by Varun Chakravarthy, a decision that was reviewed by the third umpire before being upheld.
