Aamir Sohail Clarifies Controversial Karachi Culture Remarks Following PSL Commentary Backlash

LAHORE: Former Pakistan opener Aamir Sohail has issued a clarification following criticism over remarks made during a recent PSL 11 broadcast, saying his comments were not intended to offend or misrepresent the culture of Karachi.

The incident occurred during coverage of a Pakistan Super League match between Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings, where Sohail was part of the commentary panel. A segment comparing visuals from Karachi and Lahore prompted him to speak about civic behaviour, which later drew a strong reaction online.

Sohail addressed the issue on social media platform X, acknowledging that his wording may have been inappropriate. He said his intention was to distinguish between everyday habits and cultural identity rather than criticise the city.

"pan and etiquette of pichkari with two fingers wide apart to squirt in a container is not tradition and part of culture of karachi , i guess i owe karachites an apology," Sohail wrote.

He further clarified his position, adding that Karachi remains close to him and that he appreciates its traditions.

"When speaking on cities and their cultures, Karachi is also one of my own. The culture of eating paan has fascinated me; it is in my DNA as well. The entirety and the *pichkaari is part of the folklore and tradition — it is not bad, it is a fad. Embrace it, you should too. Peace," he added.

Reaction and Context

Clips of Sohail’s earlier remarks circulated widely on social media, with some users interpreting them as generalising Karachi’s identity. The comments led to calls from sections of the audience for action against the former cricketer’s role in PSL commentary.

While the discussion centred on civic issues such as paan usage, Sohail maintained that his remarks were not directed at the people of Karachi but were part of a broader conversation during the broadcast.

The episode has drawn attention to commentary standards during the Pakistan Super League, with discussions continuing around how off-field remarks are perceived by viewers.
