In a jaw-dropping display at Queens Sports Club, Wiaan Mulder etched his name into cricket history with an unbeaten 367*—a triple century achieved in just 297 balls—on his Test captaincy debut against Zimbabwe.

This transformative innings saw him surpass South African legend Hashim Amla’s national record and secure the second-fastest Test triple ton ever .

  • First-ever Test captain to score a triple century, breaking New Zealand’s Graham Dowling’s debut captaincy record of 239.

  • Second-fastest triple century in Test history, trailing only Virender Sehwag’s 278-ball effort.

  • Highest individual score by a South African in Tests, eclipsing Amla’s 311*.

At just 27 years and 138 days, Mulder became the youngest Test captain to score a triple century, overtaking Bob Simpson’s 28-year-old record set in 1964.

Mulder, stepping in as stand-in captain after Keshav Maharaj’s injury, justified his promotion by not only converting his previous century into history but also by strategically declaring to put Zimbabwe under pressure.

  • Media accolades: Called a “masterclass” by Reuters and “carved into history” by Daijiworld, observers praised both the milestone and tactical declaration.

  • Cricketing legacy: He becomes only South Africa’s second-ever triple centurion after Amla, elevating his status to national great and captain-extraordinary.

Wiaan Mulder's 367* is nothing short of epic: from making Test history to becoming the second-fastest triple centurion, he’s established himself as a giant of South African cricket. His captaincy debut wasn’t just impressive—it was legendary.
