Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has formally approached the BCCI to host a six-match white-ball series against India this August, filling the gap left by the postponed India–Bangladesh tour.

The proposed itinerary includes three ODIs and three T20Is, offering a high-profile opportunity for India’s returning stars like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to regain international action.

India’s white-ball tour of Bangladesh, scheduled for August, has been deferred to September 2026 due to diplomatic and scheduling issues. With that slot now vacant, Sri Lanka has seized the moment, proposing a near-identical series—aimed at preserving momentum for both nations as they prep for Asia Cup 2025.

A BCCI source has confirmed that preliminary discussions are underway. Any agreement depends on availability around the Asia Cup and logistical factors.

Sri Lanka’s calendar also opens up after their Lanka Premier League was postponed, freeing mid‑August for international matches ahead of their Zimbabwe tour. The prospect of Kohli and Rohit returning to ODIs has added excitement. Both are currently rested from other formats but could be drafted for this series if approved.

What’s next

  • BCCI must coordinate with the Indian government, Asia Cup organisers, and team management—including coach Gautam Gambhir and head selector Ajit Agarkar—before confirming the series. A decision is expected soon.

  • If green-lit, the series would likely take place mid-August, prior to India's tour of England concluding on August 4 and Sri Lanka’s Zimbabwe series beginning August 29.

  • The bilateral series could serve as timely preparation for the Asia Cup and the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, granting both teams valuable match exposure.

This development not only offers a competitive replacement for the canceled Bangladesh tour but also indicates a proactive, adaptive strategy from Sri Lanka and India to maintain international cricket momentum amid shifting diplomatic and logistical landscapes.
