Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan in a thrilling last-over finish in the 6th match of the ongoing T20I Tri-Series. They beat Pakistan by just 6 runs, as Dushmantha Chameera’s brilliance with the ball sealed the deal for the visitors. With this victory, Sri Lanka has now booked a place in the final of the T20I Tri-Series, where they will again face Pakistan on November 29.
Batting first, Sri Lanka put a big score on the board, which gave them plenty of confidence to challenge Pakistan. Their start in the first innings was not very strong, as Pathum Nissanka was dismissed early in the Powerplay. However, his dismissal didn’t affect Sri Lanka’s aggressive plans, as Kamil Mishara continued to play positively to negate the Pakistani bowling attack.
The incoming Kusal Mendis was also at his absolute best in today’s game. He attacked the Pakistan bowling confidently, giving Sri Lanka a strong edge in the match. Thanks to his batting, Sri Lanka built a solid base in the Powerplay, which allowed them to post a big total later on.
Even after getting Mendis out, Pakistan failed to halt the scoring rate of the Sri Lankan batters. It largely happened due to the batting of Kamil Mishara, who made sure to keep the run-rate up throughout the innings.
Kamil Mishara eventually got out in the 17th over after making 76 runs. He smashed 6 fours and 3 sixes in total, giving Pakistan bowlers a harsh treatment in the first innings.
Some late push by Dasun Shanka then propelled the Sri Lankan innings towards a big score. He smashed quick boundaries as well, which allowed the visitors to score 184 at the end of the innings.
When Pakistan came out to bat, they started the innings very poorly. Their top order was rocked by Sri Lanka, as the visitors sent Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, and Babar Azam back to the pavilion inside the Powerplay. The wicket of Babar Azam was particularly significant, as he was dismissed for a duck after facing just two balls.
These early blows jolted the plans of Pakistan’s batting, as they went into the rebuild mode quite early in the innings. Fakhar Zaman also couldn’t do well in today’s match, as he got out for just 1 run during the middle overs. After his dismissal, Salman Ali Agha and Usman Khan built a steady partnership that made the match interesting.
The captain of Pakistan looked in good touch today, as he played confidently to take the game deep. His counter-attacking shots stole the limelight in the second innings, as he put the pressure back on Sri Lankan bowlers again.
The chase started to become tense in the last overs when Salman Ali Agha and Mohammad Nawaz launched big shots. This put a lot of pressure on the Sri Lankan bowlers. However, their ace bowler held his nerves effectively. Dushmantha Chameera displayed a masterclass of death bowling in today’s game by halting the charge of Pakistan batters smartly in the last over.
Due to his heroics, Pakistan failed to get 10 runs in the last over, as Salman Ali Agha remained stranded on the other end. His innings of 63 runs went in vain, as Sri Lanka successfully defended the target, handing Pakistan a narrow defeat by 6 runs. With this win, Sri Lanka has now confirmed their place in the final of the Tri-Series, which will be played on November 29 at the same venue.
