Spain’s World Cup Hero Rodri Makes Barcelona Switch After Seven Years With Manchester City

Rodri has officially ended his seven-year spell at Manchester City after completing a move to Barcelona. The Spanish giants will pay €60 million upfront for the midfielder, while the final amount could rise by another €16.5 million through performance-based bonuses.

The 30-year-old has committed to Barcelona for the next four years. He reportedly had interest from Real Madrid but chose to continue his career with the Catalan club instead.

"I am so happy to be here. It's a really special day, a new, important chapter in my career," said Spain’s World Cup 2026 hero, Rodri.

"It was a tough decision. Firstly because I was leaving City, who gave me everything. I was really happy there and will always be grateful. I appreciate how they facilitated my exit.” added Rodri.

Rodri further said that playing for Barcelona was always his aim, as it is one of the top football clubs in the world that has very high standards.

"Barcelona has always been a reference for me because of the values and the playing style here. It's true I had another offer, but Barca was the first option and I told the board here that." said Rodri.

The Spain captain joins a strong Barcelona midfield that already features Pedri, Gavi, Frenkie de Jong, Marc Bernal, Dani Olmo and Fermín Lopez. He arrives at Camp Nou after being named Player of the Tournament during Spain’s World Cup-winning campaign this summer.

Barcelona were not initially looking to add another midfielder this summer. However, they moved quickly for Rodri after learning that he was available, with the midfielder having only one year left on his Manchester City contract.

Rodri is now eager to get started with Barcelona after confirming the transfer recently. He is aiming to start training and give his all for the club, so that they could win major trophies in the upcoming season.

"I am ready to play now. I hope to train tomorrow, get back up to speed and be ready to help the team as soon as possible," said Rodri.
