Australia’s star batter Steve Smith is set to return to the top order for the second Test against the West Indies in Grenada. However, owing to a persistent finger injury, he will not field in his customary slip position, sources confirmed today.

Smith withdrew from Australia’s first Test in Bridgetown after suffering a compound dislocation to his right little finger during the WTC Final at Lord’s last month. Although no surgery was required, he underwent rehabilitation in New York and has resumed full training—including facing fast bowlers in the nets.

Despite passing batting drills, Smith will continue wearing a protective splint and has been advised against fielding in the slips. Instead, Australia plan to station him in the outfield at positions like mid-on or fine leg.

Wicketkeeper Alex Carey expressed optimism about Smith’s comeback, stating: “Anytime you add 10,000 runs back into the line-up, you're going to be pretty happy,” adding that Smith “seems pretty confident” following training on Tuesday.

Smith, famed for his consistency—averaging 124.57 against West Indies in Tests—will slot back into the No. 4 position, likely replacing Josh Inglis, who managed scores of 5 and 12 in the first Test.

Australia's slip cordon from the opening Test, which saw Beau Webster and Sam Konstas practice in training, will remain in place for this match. Cameron Green may also shift if needed, as the team adjusts to Smith's absence from the slip positions.

Steve Smith’s return strengthens Australia’s batting lineup at Old Trafford—but his slip cordon absence introduces notable changes. Expect shrewd fielding strategy and keen interest in how this affects Australia's momentum in Grenada.
