West Indies fast bowler Shamar Joseph has issued a confident reply to critics questioning his place in the national setup, delivering a sharp 4-wicket spell against Australia in the first Test in Barbados. The performance came shortly after former pacer Kenneth Benjamin criticised Joseph’s readiness for top-level cricket.

Speaking earlier this month with Antigua Observer, Benjamin said: “I don’t think Shamar Joseph should have been in the team… he hasn’t really done anything to convince me that he understands what is required”.

Joseph didn’t respond with words—but with a match-defining 4/48 in the first innings of the Barbados Test against a full-strength Australian side. His spell helped dismiss Australia for just 180 runs, placing West Indies in a competitive position early in the series.

This wasn’t Joseph’s first big showing. In January, the young quick stunned Australia with a 7/68 spell at the Gabba, sealing West Indies’ first Test win Down Under since 1997. Despite his red-ball success, his inclusion in the T20 squad was met with mixed reactions.

Still, Joseph has stayed committed. He’s repeatedly said he’s in it for the long haul, even after being courted by T20 leagues around the world.

With the second Test scheduled for 3 July in Grenada, Joseph has the opportunity to cross double digits in wickets this series and further establish himself as West Indies’ leading fast-bowling hope. His performances will be key for fans streaming the action on tapmad in the region.
