Australia opener Sam Konstas has turned to senior players for advice as he prepares for a crucial summer that could see him push for Ashes selection.

The 19-year-old was included in the 14-man Australia A team for two four-day games against India A. Those games will be a kind of preparation for the start of the Sheffield Shield, which begins in October. Good performances could have him in the reckoning in the Ashes against England.

Konstas conceded his first tour of the Caribbean as a Test debutant was a tough learn. He scored just 50 runs in that period - six innings - against West Indies. The youngster believes he needs to take that experience and build on it and he is trying to change his mindset.

"I am very lucky to be working with the best in the world," Konstas said. "I’m still learning about my game and how to handle different conditions. The advice from Steve Smith and David Warner has been important for me."

He highlighted Warner’s aggressive style and willingness to dictate terms as qualities he admires. Smith’s guidance has also helped him focus on patience and game awareness.

Selectors are keen to see Konstas use the upcoming red-ball matches to regain rhythm. Chairman George Bailey has spoken of the need for him to spend time in the middle, while captain Pat Cummins has expressed confidence in the young opener’s long-term potential.

Konstas said he knows failures are part of the journey but remains determined to learn and improve before the Ashes.
