India’s wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant received an official reprimand and one demerit point after showing dissent toward umpiring decisions during the first Test against England at Headingley.

During England’s first innings, the ball was inspected with a ball gauge in the 61st over. When umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney decided against replacing it, Pant expressed his frustration by arguing with the officials and throwing the ball to the ground.

Video footage and post-match reports showed Pant visibly unhappy. This proceeded with Pant taking an action that breached Article 2.8 under Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which covers dissent towards umpiring decisions.

Pant admitted the offence and accepted the ICC’s proposed sanction, avoiding a formal hearing. He avoided a fine, although Level 1 breaches can carry up to 50% match-fee penalties, as well as, one demerit point. His first within the past 24 months.

According to Cricket.com, Pant’s one demerit point remains on record for 24 months. Accumulating four within this period leads to suspension from international matches.

The incident won’t affect India’s fielding lineup, but the team management may remind Pant to maintain discipline while keeping his competitive edge.

Rishabh Pant’s reprimand serves as a reminder that even top players must respect on-field protocols. His explosive batting has already made an impact on the series, and as India heads into the final day—with England needing 350 to win—it remains to be seen if his fiery temperament will remain in check. The balance between passion and professionalism will be crucial as boundaries and ticket sales rise during this gripping Test.
