South Africa’s cricket board has named Rassie van der Dussen as the new captain for the upcoming T20 tri-series in Zimbabwe, which also features New Zealand, starting 14 July at Harare Sports Club.

Coach Shukri Conrad has rested key players like Aiden Markram, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, and David Miller to manage workloads ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup. This move made way for several newcomers

This squad revamp is part of a broader strategy to test depth and provide experience ahead of future global tournaments.

With Temba Bavuma ruled out of the two-Test series in Zimbabwe due to a hamstring injury, Keshav Maharaj will lead the Proteas in the red-ball format from 28 June to 10 July in Bulawayo. The T20 tri-series will follow the Tests, offering Van der Dussen a chance to shine in his first series as white-ball captain.

When talking to Conrad, Conrad explained that this approach balances player management with strategic planning: “With several senior players rested as part of their workload management, it creates space for these players to step in and show what they can offer, and bring them into contention for World Cup selection.”

The call-ups reflect strong performances in domestic tournaments, particularly SA20, where Pretorius and Hermann stood out.

The fact that Rassie van der Dussen will be the new captain demonstrates the approach of South Africa to the future, and this policy is oriented towards gaining both the series here and now and development. Having eight rising stars along with some seasoned bowlers is a great addition to this tri-series, which makes it the most important series leading to the subsequent international events. A competitive campaign is expected to start in mid-July.
