PHF Targets 2027 Launch for Pakistan Hockey League After Delays

PHF Targets 2027 Launch for Pakistan Hockey League After Delays

The Pakistan Hockey Federation has revived plans for a domestic franchise-style competition, targeting the first quarter of 2027 for the launch of the Pakistan Hockey League.

The PHF said it is working with its partners to establish the tournament as a major event for the sport, while also linking the project to wider efforts to rebuild hockey structures across the country.

“A new era for Pakistan Hockey! Something big is coming!” the federation said in its latest statement, confirming that preparations are underway for a possible early-2027 start.

The proposed competition is expected to form part of a broader development plan. The federation highlighted grassroots programmes, young talent, professional coaching, stronger domestic structures and greater international exposure as key areas it wants to address.

A plan that has taken years

The idea is not new. The PHF has been working on different versions of the league blueprint since 2016, but several attempts failed to get off the ground.

Permissions, scheduling problems and financial limitations had previously stalled the project. The league gained fresh attention in 2022 when reports suggested that its details would be announced in June and that matches could begin in September.

An office was reportedly established in Lahore during that period, while former Pakistan Super League project director Salman Sarwar Butt was brought in as a consultant. The tournament, however, never materialised.

Now, the federation has returned to the project with a new target.

The challenge will be turning the latest announcement into an actual competition. For Pakistan hockey, a functioning domestic league could offer players more regular high-level matches while giving younger prospects a clearer route into the national setup.

The PHF has not yet announced the teams, format, venues, schedule or commercial details for the competition. Those details will be crucial as the federation moves towards its 2027 target.

For now, the message from the PHF is clear. The Pakistan Hockey League is back in the plans, and the first quarter of 2027 has been identified as the intended starting point.

The success of the project will depend on whether the federation can finally overcome the problems that have kept the league on paper for almost a decade.

For Pakistan hockey, that next step could prove just as important as the announcement itself.
