Harry Brook’s Explosive Fifty Extends England’s Advantage Over Pakistan on Day Two of Headingley Test

England moved into a strong position on day two of the Headingley Test after Harry Brook scored a rapid 91. His innings helped the hosts stretch their lead to 195 runs, although Pakistan’s left-arm spinner Ali Usman picked up his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

England finished the day on 366/8, putting the visitors under immense pressure. Jamie Smith was still at the crease on 16, while Jofra Archer was yet to open his account. The hosts will now look to add more runs and increase their advantage when play resumes on day three.

Talking about the start, the first session of the day was lost due to heavy rain, so England could only resume their first innings after lunch. They came out with the same batting strategy, with Zak Crawley and Joe Root putting the visitors’ bowlers under pressure.

The pair carried their third-wicket stand to 150 runs and both batters reached their half-centuries during the partnership. England looked comfortable as the two continued to find runs with ease.

Ali Usman finally ended the partnership in the 44th over by sending Crawley back to the pavilion. The 25-year-old played a fine innings of 73 from 100 balls, hitting 14 fours along the way.

Root was also dismissed in the following over by Khurram Shahzad. The experienced batter scored 66 from 112 balls, including 10 boundaries, before returning to the pavilion. His dismissal left England at 202/4, giving Pakistan the much-needed relief.

After losing two quick wickets, Dan Lawrence joined Harry Brook at the crease. The two settled in and added 37 runs without losing another wicket, allowing England to go into the break in a better position.

When play resumed in the final session, England were 239/4, with Lawrence and Brook back at the crease. They continued to score freely and took the team past 300, while their fifth-wicket stand reached 120 runs.

Lawrence was eventually dismissed by Usman, bringing Jamie Smith in to join Brook. They added 34 runs before Ali Usman ended Brook’s stay at the crease. He finished as England’s top scorer with 91 from 93 balls, hitting 13 fours in his innings.

Ali Usman picked up two more wickets in the 80th over, removing Gus Atkinson for three and Ollie Robinson for a duck. The double strike completed his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket and left England at 364/8.

Jamie Smith and Jofra Archer then played carefully to avoid any further setbacks, as England ended the day strongly at Headingley, leading Pakistan by 195 runs.
