Pakistan will take on Afghanistan in Sharjah on Friday, August 29, as part of the UAE Tri-Nation series that also features the hosts. With the Asia Cup looming, the management is keen to try new options and test the balance before heading into the high-pressure tournament.

A major talking point is the absence of Babar Azam from the lineup for the series opener. His exclusion puts added responsibility on the young batters, making this a real test of character as they step up in his absence.

The opening slot has drawn the most attention. Young left-hander Saim Ayub is likely to continue, but instead of partnering Fakhar Zaman, he could be joined by Sahibzada Farhan. Numbers back the change. In just six innings, Saim and Farhan have piled up 275 runs at an average of 45.83 with a strike rate above 140. Fakhar and Saim, however, have managed only 23 runs across three outings, struggling to find rhythm at the top.

That record may push Fakhar down to number three, where his power-hitting can add value in the middle overs. Such a move could balance aggression with stability and allow Pakistan to maximize both partnerships.

Another talking point is Shaheen Afridi’s workload. The spearhead has featured heavily in recent weeks, and the management may choose to rotate him with an eye on the Asia Cup. With batting reshuffles and bowling options under review, Pakistan’s first XI in Sharjah will be watched with great curiosity.
