Babar Azam, Pakistan’s former captain and a top tier batter, along with ODI skipper Mohammad Rizwan have been demoted to Category B in the newly released central contracts list by PCB for the year 2025–26. Both Babar and Rizwan were dropped from Pakistan’s Asia Cup 2025 squad, further solidifying their demotion and signaling dropping confidence from the selectors.

Furthermore, no player has been placed in Category A this year. This is an unprecedented move, signaling a reset of the hierarchy within Pakistan’s cricketing setup.

The total number of contracted players have been increased from 27 to 30, with an emphasis on maintaining squad depth and introducing more promising talent into the system.

Being demoted from Category A to B marks a significant pay cut. While Category A players previously earned PKR 4.5 million per month, the Category B rate is PKR 3 million per month—a reduction of nearly PKR 1.5 million monthly. The board's revamped contract model reflects a broader transition phase, aiming to restore Pakistan’s competitive edge by rewarding form, performance and reinforcing depth across format

There are also reports suggesting PCB may remove the contractual clause granting players a share (3%) of ICC revenue—potentially impacting earnings across the board.
