Cricket South Africa (CSA) has named veteran talent spotter Patrick Moroney as the new convenor of selectors for the Proteas men's senior team. His appointment, effective 1 August, fills a role left vacant since 2023 and marks the reinstatement of structured selection support alongside head coach Shukri Conrad and director Enoch Nkwe.

Moroney brings over two decades of selection experience—spanning national academy roles, emerging squads, and the Under‑19 side. He previously worked closely with former convenor Victor Mpitsang from 2019 to 2023. Nkwe praised Moroney's depth of knowledge and track record: “His deep understanding of the game… makes him the ideal person for the job”.

Why It Matters

  • Strategic timing: Moroney's first task will be shaping the squad for the white-ball Australia tour, starting 10 August.

  • Reinstalled hierarchy: With Moroney in place, coach Conrad gains essential support in selection decisions—marking a return to pre-2023 planning structures.

  • Talent pathway strengthened: His background in youth formats could bridge emerging talent into senior ranks.

Moroney's appointment has been welcomed as a stabilising move ahead of a key international season. Experts see his presence as reinforcing strategic oversight and accountability within the selection process. His collaborative approach with Conrad and Nkwe establishes a unified front leading into the Australia tour.

The first major test for Moroney will arrive quickly—selecting the right blend for South Africa’s white-ball challenge down under. His track record suggests strong talent insight, but on-field results will ultimately define his success.
