Cricket South Africa (CSA) has named veteran talent spotter Patrick Moroney as the new convenor of selectors for the Proteas men's senior team. His appointment, effective 1 August, fills a role left vacant since 2023 and marks the reinstatement of structured selection support alongside head coach Shukri Conrad and director Enoch Nkwe.

Moroney has more than 20 years of selection expertise, which includes working with the national academies, developing teams, and in the Under-19 team.  He previously worked closely with former convenor Victor Mpitsang from 2019 to 2023. 's depth of knowledge and track record: “His deep understanding of the game… makes him the ideal person for the job”.

Why It Matters

  • Strategic timing: Moroney's first task will be shaping the squad for the white-ball Australia tour, starting 10 August.

  • Reinstalled hierarchy: Conrad as coach is being offered a crucial ally in his choice of selections as Moroney is the backstop one can expect before 2023 planning arrangements.

  • Talent pipeline improved: His experience in youth structures may help to bring young talent through to senior spots.

Moroney's appointment has been welcomed as a stabilising move ahead of a key international season. The professionals perceive his appointment to strengthen strategic control and responsibility in the selection process. His uniting management of Conrad and Nkwe sets a common ground for the Australia tour.

The first major test for Moroney will arrive quickly, selecting the right blend for South Africa’s white-ball challenge down under. His history provides evidence that he has good talent insight in mind; the measurements are going to be based on how many games he wins or loses.
