Messi Breaks MLS Goal Record: 100 Contributions in Record Time
Lionel Messi set another benchmark in Major League Soccer after reaching 100 goal contributions faster than any player in league history during Inter Miami CF’s 4-2 win over Toronto FC on Saturday. The Argentine forward scored once and provided two assists, taking him to the milestone in just 64 appearances.
The achievement places Messi ahead of former Toronto forward Sebastian Giovinco, who previously held the record with 100 contributions in 95 matches. Messi’s tally since arriving in 2023 now stands at 59 goals and 41 assists, underlining his immediate impact in MLS.
Record Pace Compared to MLS Greats
Messi’s progression to the milestone has been significantly quicker than other leading attackers in the league. Players such as Robbie Keane, Carlos Vela and Josef Martínez all required more than 90 matches to reach similar numbers. This highlights the pace at which Messi has accumulated goals and assists.
His contributions have come consistently across league fixtures and playoff matches. This makes him one of the most productive players in MLS over a short span.
Since joining Inter Miami, Messi has played a central role in the club’s rise. He has helped the team secure multiple trophies, including MLS Cup, while also collecting individual honours such as back-to-back MVP awards.
Last season, he recorded 62 goal contributions across competitions, setting a new league mark for combined goals and assists in a single campaign. His performances also earned him the Golden Boot as the league’s top scorer.
Strong Start to 2026 Season
Messi has carried that form into the current campaign. Earlier this year, he reached 900 career goals and became the fastest player to register 20 goals and 20 assists in MLS play.
After 12 matchdays, he remains among the leading scorers in the Golden Boot race with nine goals in 11 starts. He has also added multiple Player of the Matchday awards, continuing to influence results on a regular basis.
The latest milestone further strengthens Messi’s position among the league’s most effective attacking players since his arrival.
