Croatian legend Luka Modrić has officially signed for AC Milan on a one-year contract, with an option to extend until June 2027. The midfielder ended a 13-year tenure at Real Madrid and shared his excitement upon arrival in Milan.

At 39, Modrić brings an illustrious legacy to San Siro:

  • 597 appearances, 28 major titles at Real, including six Champions Leagues

  • Winner of the 2018 Ballon d’Or and 2018 World Cup Golden Ball, captaining Croatia’s all-time most capped player with 188 appearances.

Choosing the iconic #14 jersey—a tribute to Dutch legend Johan Cruyff—Modrić arrives ready to inject calm leadership and high-level experience into Milan’s midfield. In an Instagram announcement, he said he’s “very happy … to start a new chapter.”

Under returning coach Massimiliano Allegri, Modrić joins a midfield stocked with Youssouf Fofana, Yunus Musah, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Samuele Ricci —highlighting the club’s pivot toward experience balanced with youth.

Milan finished a disappointing eighth in Serie A last season, missing European qualification. Modrić’s presence is expected to rejuvenate the side ahead of their opener against Cremonese on August 23.

Modrić’s move underscores Serie A’s growing role as a destination for veteran talent: the league’s slower, tactical style and tactical discipline suit older stars aiming for longevity. Modrić joins the likes of Kevin De Bruyne (Napoli) and Francesco Acerbi (Inter) in making Italy their next stage.

What Comes Next

  • Medicals & integration: Modrić is set to start training in early August after finishing his summer holidays in Zagreb.

  • Debut plans: His first competitive outing is likely in the Coppa Italia against Bari, followed by the Serie A opener versus Cremonese.

  • World Cup ambitions: Staying match-fit is key as Modrić aims to lead Croatia in the 2026 World Cup finals next summer

Luka Modrić’s arrival at AC Milan marks one of the summer’s biggest moves—a celebrated maestro joining a storied club seeking a renaissance. With tactical poise, experience, and dreadnought pedigree, Modrić is set to not only boost Milan’s midfield but also strengthen his own World Cup bid for Croatia. Serie A—and Milan fans—will be watching closely.
