Latest Reports Indicate Pakistan And India Could Feature in Multi-Nation Series

A multi-nation tournament featuring Pakistan and India could be discussed by the ICC as it looks for new ways to increase the commercial value of international cricket. Recent reports have indicated that a tri-series or four-team event involving the arch-rivals is among the ideas being considered.

It should be noted that such a model is not new for the PCB. Pakistan has been interested in playing a tri-series or four-nation tournament with India for some time, and the proposal has now gained fresh attention ahead of an upcoming ICC meeting.

The meeting will focus on the future of the international cricket schedule and is set for September 22 and 23 in Dubai. Representatives from the 12 Full Member nations and eight associate countries are expected to attend this event.

A key point of discussion could be whether multi-team events are more financially rewarding than bilateral ODI and T20I series. The ICC and its members are expected to look at the commercial benefits of bringing several teams together for a single tournament.

If the proposal gets the green light, Pakistan and India could once again share the same tournament, with one or two other sides completing the line-up. The presence of the two rivals could also give the event a major boost in terms of global interest and broadcast value.

A Pakistan-India bilateral series has been off the table for years, mainly because of political tensions between the two countries. Their meetings since then have been limited to major tournaments. They have faced each other in events run by the ICC and the Asian Cricket Council, where both teams enter as part of a larger competition.

A multi-nation event could offer a way for the two teams to play each other without arranging a bilateral series. Reports from Indian media suggest the Indian government is more open to Pakistan-India matches when they take place as part of a tournament involving other teams.

The United Arab Emirates, England and Australia are among the possible neutral locations if a new multi-nation event is eventually planned. Hosting the matches away from both countries could also make the proposal easier to arrange.

With Pakistan-India games attracting some of the biggest audiences in cricket, their inclusion in a tri-series or four-team tournament would likely make the event a major attraction for broadcasters, sponsors and fans.
