In a groundbreaking move, the Buss family has agreed to sell a majority stake in the Los Angeles Lakers to Mark Walter, owner of the Dodgers. According to Reuters, the deal is valued at approximately $10 billion, marking the most expensive sale in U.S. professional sports history.

The sale gives Walter majority control through his firm, TWG Global, already the majority owner of the MLB’s Dodgers, while the Buss family retains around 15 % of the franchise for now. Notably, Jeanie Buss will remain as the Lakers’ governor, continuing to lead basketball and business operations under the new ownership structure.

Jerry Buss originally purchased the Lakers in 1979 for $67.5 million. Now, 46 years later, that investment has blossomed nearly 150‑fold, cementing the franchise’s status among the top in sports valuation. According to the Washington Post, the $10 billion price tag surpasses the recent $6.1 billion sale of the Celtics earlier this year.

Basketball legend Magic Johnson praised the deal, saying on X that Walter “is driven by winning, excellence, and doing everything the right way” and called for Lakers fans to be “ecstatic”.

With Walter’s proven success building the Dodgers into a World Series powerhouse and deep interests across sports, many fans are optimistic about the Lakers evolving into a championship-calibre organisation once again.
