Pakistan’s vice-captain Shadab Khan is unlikely to feature in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 after undergoing shoulder surgery in early July. Medical advice suggests a minimum three-month recovery, effectively ruling him out of the tournament scheduled from 9 to 28 September in the UAE.

Shadab has missed Pakistan’s recent series against Bangladesh and the ongoing West Indies tour due to recurrent shoulder issues. According to officials, his rehabilitation timeline means a return before October is improbable.

As yet, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has not announced a replacement for the T20 vice‑captaincy. No deputy was appointed during the interim absence, and the touring squad in the Caribbean also lacks a designated second-in-command alongside caretaker captain Salman Ali Agha.

What This Means

Aspect

Impact

On-field balance

Pakistan loses a key all‑round wicket-taking option in limited overs.

Leadership void

With no vice-captain named, there’s uncertainty in leadership structure for T20 matches.

Tournament ramifications

Pakistan opens Asia Cup campaign on 12 September vs Oman and faces rivals India in Dubai on 14 September without Shadab’s strategic and bowling contributions

Analysts warn it’s a substantial blow ahead of critical fixtures. Shadab’s absence affects both tactical flexibility and momentum-building ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026.
