India will play in the Asia Cup. The government has confirmed the team’s participation but ruled out any bilateral cricket with Pakistan.

The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs said Indian teams will not tour Pakistan. Pakistani teams will also not be invited to India. In a statement, the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs said India’s policy on sports reflects its overall approach toward Pakistan. “Indian teams will not play bilateral matches in Pakistan, nor will Pakistani teams be invited to play in India. But in multilateral events, whether at home or abroad, India will participate as per international sports practices and in the interest of our players,” the ministry explained. The ministry added that India will still play in ICC and ACC tournaments where Pakistan is present.

Calls for a boycott grew after the BCCI named the Asia Cup squad earlier this week. The debate had already been heated when Indian teams pulled out of matches against Pakistan in a legends event in England earlier this year.

The government’s stand clears the path for India to compete in global tournaments without bilateral ties. It also allows Pakistan to feature in multilateral events hosted in India.

The Asia Cup runs from September 9 to 28 in the UAE. India will now prepare to face Pakistan in one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament.
