Germany Join Pakistan Atop Hockey World Cup Winners List

Germany beat Spain 1-0 at the Belfius Arena on Sunday to retain the men’s Hockey World Cup title and equal Pakistan’s record of four World Cup triumphs.

Michel Struthoff scored the only goal late in the third quarter, securing Germany’s second straight world title.

The Germany Hockey World Cup campaign ended with a tight final between two of the tournament’s strongest defensive sides. Spain had also conceded very few goals on their way to the final.

Germany created the first clear chance when Benedikt Schwarzhaupt’s penalty-corner effort was saved by Spain goalkeeper Luis Calzado.

Spain struggled to threaten in the opening half. Borja Lacalle tested Germany goalkeeper Jean-Paul Danneberg with a powerful shot in the second quarter, but Danneberg kept it out.

Spain improved after the break and won three penalty corners in the third quarter. Pepe Cunill and captain Marc Miralles could not convert either opportunity.

Germany then found the breakthrough on the counter.

Hannes Muller won possession near the top of the circle and played the ball to Struthoff, who had moved towards the byline. Struthoff rounded Calzado before shooting into an empty net.

Spain replaced Calzado with an outfield player in the final minutes and pushed forward for an equaliser. Germany defended their lead to the final whistle.

The Germany vs Spain hockey final gave Germany their fourth men's Hockey World Cup title, bringing them level with Pakistan.

Pakistan won their four World Cup titles in 1971, 1978, 1982 and 1994. Their first came at the inaugural World Cup in Barcelona in 1971, followed by victories in Buenos Aires in 1978 and Bombay in 1982. Pakistan’s fourth title came in Sydney in 1994, when they beat the Netherlands in the final.

That record stood alone for decades. Germany have now matched it after winning the 2002, 2006, 2023 and 2026 editions.

Germany’s latest title also makes it back-to-back World Cup victories, extending their position among the tournament’s most successful teams.

Spain, despite creating pressure in the second half, could not find the goal needed to force the final beyond 60 minutes.
