India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir is facing mounting criticism following the team’s defeat to England at Headingley, with the pressure intensifying ahead of the second Test starting 2 July at Edgbaston.

India have won just 3 out of 12 Test matches since Gambhir took charge last year, including a painful 0–3 home series loss to New Zealand and a similar 1–3 defeat in Australia.

Former opener Aakash Chopra released a video warning that the pressure “is absolutely mounting,” citing India’s underwhelming Test statistics, only two wins against Bangladesh and one in Australia up to this point, urging Gambhir to deliver in the upcoming Edgbaston match.

Critics have also questioned Gambhir’s tactics, most notably, his support staff structure and team selection. Former cricketer Mohammad Kaif suggested that Gambhir "hasn't been on top of his game tactically," pointing to the unexpected omission of senior spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin in recent Tests.

Despite the scrutiny, Gambhir maintained his composure in recent press statements, noting he feels under constant pressure, regardless of results. He also stood by the rotation policy for fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, reaffirming the importance of workload management despite Indonesia’s loss when talking to Reuters.

India heads into the second Test at Edgbaston beginning 2 July, with fans and experts keenly anticipating whether Gambhir can orchestrate a turnaround. With Shubman Gill making his captaincy debut and Jasprit Bumrah rested for workload reasons, team dynamics will be scrutinised more than ever.
