India head coach Gautam Gambhir has publicly backed the team’s lower order after a dramatic batting collapse in the first Test at Headingley, urging fans and critics to view the performance holistically.

Following England's record chase, Gambhir emphasised that responsibility for the defeat is collective. According to him, he defended bowlers Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur, saying: “Prasidh bowled really well… he’s got bounce… and he’ll keep getting better with experience.”.

Gambhir’s message extended to the batsmen, including the lower order, with a tone reminiscent of his declaration: “We lose together, win together.”

India’s middle and lower order struggled under England’s relentless chase, with several batters falling cheaply as England closed out a 371-run target—a total bolstered by Ben Duckett’s 149. Though they took a lead of 5 runs in the first innings courtesy of a 583 wickets that Jasprit Bumrah had taken in the first innings, India failed to hold the advantage in the second and last innings, giving in to the England batting force.

Demanding collective responsibility, Gambhir is highlighting that all the players from seamers to tailenders require development and should be trusted.

Public support by Gambhir is meant to strengthen the moral continuity of a team and to protect the players against outside criticism. With key players set to take part in the second Test in Birmingham on 2 July, India will need composure and collective resolve, both from the top order and the lower order, to avoid another collapse.
