Pakistan Women’s captain Fatima Sana expressed regret over missing the chance to beat England for the first time in a World Cup. She said that the team fought with full energy on the field, however, the weather was beyond their control. Her statement certainly carries a lot of weight, as Pakistan had the golden chance to defeat England at Colombo. They also started well in the second innings, until the rain came with full intensity to halt the play.
"Today was the day we could beat them... it was not in our favour,” said dejected Fatima Sana at the post-match press conference.
She then reflected on the bowling performance of her team, that made batting quite difficult for the England team. She said the pitch was made for fast bowlers, hence they utilized the seam and swing over it perfectly.
“We know this pitch is good for pacers. I saw lots of performances before on this track. I tried to bowl on a good length, tried for the stumps. But it would have been good if we'd won the match,” said Fatima Sana.
She further said that the conditions at the R Premadasa Stadium also suited the batting style of her team. Due to this, they were feeling confident to chase the total, however, rain didn’t allow them to get a historic win.
“The conditions suited our batters, it was wet and helped them. In last couple of matches we did well in bowling and need to improve our batting. We will sit and chat together." said Fatima Sana.
In the match against England at Colombo, Pakistan were on top from the start of the play. They derailed the batting lineup of England by bowling aggressively. Fatima Sana was the chief destructor in the first innings, as she took 4 wickets while giving away just 27 runs.
Pakistan was looking well set to chase the England total, as the opening duo of Muneeba Ali and Omaima Sohail also started the batting innings positively. Unfortunately, the match was halted by rain, and the two teams left the ground while sharing equal points. With this draw, Pakistan’s hopes of reaching the semi-final also ended, as they are still standing at the bottom of the points table currently.
