Defending champions England triumphed over world champions Spain in a dramatic UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 final, winning a 3–1 penalty shootout after the match ended 1–1 in extra time.

Spain took the lead in the 25th minute through a headed goal by Mariona Caldentey, capitalising on a lapse in England’s defence.

England responded in the second half when substitute Chloe Kelly delivered a precise cross for Alessia Russo to head home the equaliser in the 57th minute.

In the shootout, England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton saved penalties from Spain's Mariona Caldentey and Aitana Bonmati, putting England in the lead.

Spain’s Salma Paralluelo missed her kick wide, creating the opening for England. Kelly then rocketed home the decisive spot-kick to secure a historic second consecutive Euro victory for England.

  • Chloe Kelly was England’s talisman once again—providing the assist and finishing the job with calm composure in her trademark celebration.

  • Hannah Hampton earned Player of the Match honours for her heroics in goal, including vital saves during the shootout.

  • Manager Sarina Wiegman earned criticism after starting a less‑than‑fit Lauren James, who had to be substituted early—augmenting the role of Kelly who turned the game.

Broader Significance

  • England became the first senior English team to win consecutive major titles on foreign soil, adding this European crown to their 2022 triumph.

  • The tournament final broke attendance records and reinforced Wiegman’s perfect record in Euro finals—three titles in three attempts.
