Cristiano Ronaldo Targets 1,000 Goals Amid Portugal Exit Controversy

Cristiano Ronaldo Targets 1,000 Goals Amid Portugal Exit Controversy

Cristiano Ronaldo has returned to club football following the controversy surrounding his departure from Portugal's national team camp, scoring for Al Nassr as he closes in on 1,000 career goals.

The 41-year-old forward scored his 980th career goal in Al Nassr's 3-0 victory over Diriyah on October 9. He opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, reacting quickly to a rebound after Kingsley Coman's effort was saved. The goal left him 20 short of the landmark.

His return to club action came just days after a public disagreement with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus drew widespread attention.

What Happened Between Ronaldo and Portugal?

Ronaldo left Portugal's training camp in Copenhagen on September 30 after learning that he would not start the Nations League fixture against Denmark. The dispute followed his absence from Portugal's 2-1 victory over Norway, in which he remained an unused substitute.

The forward later accused Jesus of breaking promises over his expected playing time and the way the situation would be explained publicly. Jesus disputed Ronaldo's account of their agreement, leaving the disagreement unresolved in public statements.

Ronaldo later apologised to Portugal’s supporters and teammates for leaving the camp. However, his absence angered fans, prompting many to unfollow Portugal’s official Instagram account. The backlash led to a record drop in followers for the national team’s account.

Ronaldo also made it clear that he had not retired from international football and remained available for selection, although any disciplinary action could affect his return.

Ronaldo Closes In on 1,000 Career Goals

For now, the Cristiano Ronaldo 1,000 career goals pursuit remains a defining target as he continues his career with Al Nassr.

His latest strike against Diriyah took his reported official senior career tally to 980 goals for club and country. Reaching 1,000 would mark another milestone in a career spanning Sporting CP, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, Al Nassr and Portugal.

Al Nassr also benefited from the victory in the Saudi Pro League, moving joint-top of the standings with six wins from their first eight league matches in the 2026-27 campaign. Samu Costa and Coman scored the other goals against Diriyah.

The Cristiano Ronaldo Portugal exit controversy has raised questions about his relationship with the national team, but his return to scoring form has kept the focus on his immediate footballing ambitions.

His next challenge is to maintain that form for Al Nassr while the federation's disciplinary process continues. Whether he can reach 1,000 goals in the coming months will depend on his scoring rate and available appearances. His international future, meanwhile, remains tied to the outcome of the dispute and his continued willingness to represent Portugal.
