The highly anticipated event featuring Lionel Messi at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium descended into chaos on December 13. Fans vandalized parts of the venue after the global football superstar left following a short appearance. Spectators who had come to see Messi became frustrated when he left the event abruptly after just 20 minutes.
Shortly after the chaos broke out, pictures of the mismanagement and disorder inside Salt Lake Stadium went viral on social media. It was certainly an embarrassing moment for India, highlighting how poorly the reception of global superstars is managed in the country.
It was reported that fans bought the event’s tickets at hefty prices. They became furious when the organizers prevented them from getting a proper glimpse of the global superstar, as Messi left the stadium quickly without greeting the fans.
As a result, the stadium descended into complete disorder, with fans ripping out stadium seats and hurling water bottles onto the track. Besides that, many people stormed directly onto the field, vandalizing banners and tents to express their frustration with the authorities.
“For me, to watch Messi is a pleasure, a dream. But I have missed the chance to have a glimpse because of the mismanagement in the stadium,” said one spectator who came to the event to see the legendary Argentine footballer.
Another angry fan said that he spent $55 to get a glimpse of Messi, however, the utter mismanagement caused by the authorities ruined all his hopes.
“I paid Rs 5,000 ($55) for the ticket and came with my son to watch Messi, not politicians. The police and military personnel were taking selfies, and the management is to blame,” said a frustrated spectator who came to see Lionel Messi at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium.
Pictures of the event are going viral on social media, as netizens are slamming the management of the stadium who made the event a complete mess. It is a stark reminder how high-profile events are managed in India, where ordinary people are rarely given a proper chance to meet their favorite global stars.
